Choose porcelain paving or sandstone by comparing the specific products and the complete patio work. A supply price per square metre leaves out decisions about the background, laying pattern, cuts, edges, drainage and associated repairs.

Look at real samples

Ask for the precise range, colour, size, thickness and finish. View samples in the intended setting and discuss the appearance you want across the whole area. Natural stone variation and a manufactured printed finish look different, and neither guarantees the right result for every garden.

Record the accepted product references and sample decision. Check how the supplier describes variation, quantities and batches. A photograph on a screen should not be the only approval for a substantial order.

Keep levels and drainage in the project brief

Provide a plan showing the house, doors, steps, boundaries and existing drainage. Explain what you want retained and what is changing. The contractor needs to assess the site arrangement and suitable construction before a complete package can be priced.

The separate front-garden planning guide covers that planning context. Patio proposals can differ in consent, drainage and installation requirements, so ask the relevant designer or authority about your proposal when needed.

Use the selected manufacturer’s installation information

Marshalls publishes product-specific technical information for its natural stone and porcelain paving. Its guidance shows why bedding, priming, joints, handling and associated products must be checked for the selected range, and not copied from a generic patio description.

Ask the installer to identify the system allowed in the quotation. Keep cutting, edge pieces, steps and difficult access visible. The price of a full pack does not show how much usable paving the finished pattern will need.

Two-option patio comparison

RecordWhat to confirm
Product choiceRange, samples, size, finish, batch/variation information and quantities.
InstallationAssessed preparation, specified system, pattern, cutting and joints.
Edges and interfacesSteps, boundaries, drainage, door thresholds and adjoining finishes.
Complete scopeAccess, removal, waste, supply responsibilities and care information.

Ask about cleaning and maintenance

Obtain the care instructions for each selected product and discuss the way the patio will be used. Record any recommended treatment, cleaning limitations and maintenance of joints. Avoid relying on a blanket promise that a whole material category is maintenance-free or never slippery.

Consider furniture, planting, nearby trees and the appearance of wet surfaces when choosing a finish. Put these questions to the supplier and installer. They do not make one product universally best.

Compare the same measured area

In a hypothetical comparison, two quotes use the same patio outline but different edge and step allowances. Before comparing totals, the owner asks for those items on the same basis. The revised comparison separates paving supply, preparation, installation and associated work.

Send the postcode, approximate dimensions, photographs, access details and preferred products for a quotation. Identify removal, retained drains, steps and boundaries. The final proposal should explain quantities, supply responsibilities and assumptions discovered during the site assessment.
