PROJECT ADVICE
Planning refurbishment around business opening hours
For a pub, nursery, shop or office, the programme needs to reflect how the premises operate. Start with the activities that must continue, then assess whether the proposed work can be separated from them.

Map the spaces and the working day
Mark the areas included in the work, the areas that will remain in use and any shared entrances, corridors or facilities. Explain opening hours, staff access and key dates. Nurseries, hospitality venues and retail premises have different routines; a generic promise to work around you is not enough to define a programme.
Identify work that may interrupt operations
Discuss noisy or dusty tasks, removal of finishes, service interruptions and work affecting access. Ask the relevant contractor or specialist to explain what each task involves and when the area can be released for use. Whether trading can continue depends on the work and site arrangements; some stages may require closure.
Compare closure with phased work
A phased approach can keep certain areas available, but it may mean smaller work zones, repeated protection and more than one visit by a trade. A planned closure can allow a different sequence. Review both options against the scope, operational needs and budget before promising a reopening date.
Resolve deliveries and specialist interfaces
Confirm loading arrangements, storage, waste collection and any landlord or centre-management restrictions. Establish delivery dates for client-supplied fittings and equipment. Make clear when electrical, plumbing, ventilation or other specialists need access, and when their work will be ready for ceilings or walls to be closed.
Agree communication and changes
Identify one person who can make client decisions and one contact for day-to-day site coordination. Record who informs staff, tenants or other occupiers of agreed arrangements. Keep a current programme and discuss the effect of changes to products, layout or scope. Late decisions can affect subsequent trades even when the individual change looks small.
Allow for completion before reopening
Installation is not the only task before a space returns to use. Identify the agreed inspections, specialist testing, snagging, cleaning and handover information. Confirm which party supplies each item and what must be complete before reopening. Include deliveries and setup by your own suppliers in the overall plan.
Send the programme constraints with your enquiry
Provide the postcode, work schedule, proposed layout, normal operating hours, occupied areas and desired completion date. Highlight dates that cannot move and any approvals or information still outstanding. These details help establish a realistic scope and sequence before a quotation is agreed.
