The product and the existing background

Include the manufacturer, product reference, fitting instructions and any proposed underlay or adhesive. Different products have different background, moisture, movement and installation requirements. Existing flooring, loose areas, unevenness or a history of leaks should be raised before the work is priced.

Tell us what lies below the current finish if known, and whether there is underfloor heating. The selected product and its current instructions guide the assessment; one moisture limit or preparation method should not be assumed to suit every floor. Floor screeding is outside this service.

Thresholds, skirting and retained items

Mark where the floor starts and stops, how it meets adjoining rooms and which trims or threshold profiles you want. Decide whether existing skirting stays, is removed and refitted, or is replaced. Door clearance and the finished build-up need checking together.

Identify fitted cabinets, heavy furniture and appliances that will remain. Agree who moves them and whether the floor is fitted around retained items. A floor-only quotation should also state who makes good decoration and completes any adjoining carpentry.

Use a room-by-room fitting schedule

For each room, record approximate length and width, the chosen product, laying direction or pattern, edge details and what is retained. A marked-up plan is more useful than a single total area when doorways, recesses and several finishes are involved. Final quantities and any ordering allowance depend on the layout and product.

Agree delivery, storage, access and room release before installation. The manufacturer may specify storage, acclimatisation or site conditions for the selected floor. Tell us which rooms must stay usable, when other trades finish and who protects the new floor from later work. Programme dates follow the agreed preparation and product requirements.

An area rate can hide important differences. Compare installation, edge finishing and preparation on the same product and room schedule.

The quotation confirms the accepted product and installation package. Unknown conditions beneath an existing floor should be identified as assumptions or provisional work and reviewed before additional work proceeds.

Questions before you enquire

Can you fit flooring I have already bought?

Send the product details, quantity and installation instructions. We need to review suitability, background condition and the components available before confirming fitting. Check the delivery and returns position with your supplier before ordering additional materials.

Is subfloor preparation included?

Only the preparation described in the agreed quotation is included. Removal may reveal conditions needing further assessment or work by others. We do not offer floor screeding, so tell us about any separate preparation contractor and the required handover condition.

Do you remove skirting and trim doors?

Yes, within the defined package. Tell us whether you prefer retained skirting with an edge trim or removal and refitting. Door work, decoration and any specified performance requirements need their own clear scope.

What to send for a useful quotation

Send the London postcode, room plan and approximate areas, flooring product details, photographs and known background information. Include underfloor heating if present, thresholds, skirting choices, retained furniture, who supplies materials and the intended work sequence.
