How long after plastering can you paint? Check the system first

Planning graphic for painting new plaster: plaster and background, coating instructions, trade confirmation.

Original planning overview. Use the actual project requirements.

There is no single number of days after plastering that makes every wall ready for every paint. The answer depends on the plaster, the background, the depth of the work, room conditions and the coating you intend to apply.

Use the product information and a readiness check with the plasterer and decorator. A diary date is useful for planning, but the condition of the work and the chosen paint’s instructions come first.

Find out what was applied

Ask whether the work is a finish skim, a deeper plaster repair or another system. Record the product and background, including areas where the depth or construction differs. One room can contain several different drying situations.

British Gypsum's plaster systems guidance directs users to the paint manufacturer's recommendations. It also warns that Thistle HardWall can look dry at the surface before it is dry through its depth. A uniform-looking surface is therefore not a universal readiness test.

Choose the coating before fixing the decoration programme

Give the decorator the exact paint name and current technical instructions. Ask which substrate condition, preparation and first coat the manufacturer requires. Check the finish coat too, because one initial coat does not make every later product suitable.

Some products are specifically intended for new plaster. For example, the Dulux Trade Spraymatt technical sheet has its own new-plaster application guidance. That does not create a drying period or dilution ratio for every other emulsion.

Avoid borrowing a mist-coat recipe from a different product. The selected paint's instructions should establish whether thinning is appropriate and how preparation is carried out.

Keep a short readiness record

QuestionInformation for the decorator
What is the background?Board, masonry or existing construction, including any known damp issue.
What plaster was used?Product, application date and areas with deeper or different work.
What conditions apply?Room use, ventilation and the agreed drying arrangements.
Which coating system?Primer or first coat, finish paint and current manufacturer guidance.
Who confirms readiness? The responsible trades, inspection date, findings and any area still held.

This is a practical planning aid, not a substitute for the manufacturer's requirements. If the background condition is uncertain, ask what assessment is needed before it is covered.

Plan around the slowest relevant area

Consider a room with a skimmed wall and a deeper repair around an altered doorway. This is a hypothetical example. The programme should show both areas, so the wall’s expected paint date is not applied to the doorway automatically.

Ask whether decoration can sensibly proceed in separate areas or whether the room should wait. Keep access for inspection, protect completed work and record how later touch-ups will be handled. Agree a revised date if the readiness check does not pass.

What should the quotation include?

List preparation, the coating system, number of coats as specified, access and the extent of decoration. Clarify whether a local plaster repair includes painting only the patch or the whole wall or ceiling. Matching an existing finish should be discussed before the decoration boundary is agreed.

For a plastering and decorating package, send photographs, the areas involved, known plaster and paint details and your intended completion date. We can discuss preparation and sequencing, but we cannot promise that every newly plastered surface will be ready on the same day.
