Moving a kitchen sink starts with checking how the proposed position connects to the existing water and drainage services. A different cupboard position may look straightforward on a kitchen plan while leaving the waste route, access or worktop details unresolved.

Before ordering the final layout, give the installer both the existing and proposed positions. Ask for the relevant site checks and record what remains uncertain before committing to cabinets or a worktop cut-out.

Mark the old and new positions on one plan

Show the current sink, the proposed sink centre and the accessible existing drainage connection. Add doors, windows, appliances and the cupboards beside and below the sink. Photographs help the installer understand what can already be seen.

Do not open up hidden construction yourself to complete the drawing. Ask the appointed trades what investigation is needed and how it can be done safely, with the relevant service and asbestos information available.

Ask the plumber to assess the complete route

The assessment should cover the proposed waste route and connection, available space and maintenance access, plus water supply changes and any affected appliance connections.

Approved Document H is England's guidance for drainage and waste disposal. The appropriate arrangement depends on the premises and proposed work. Avoid treating another kitchen's pipe route or a generic distance rule as proof that your layout will work.

Where a route crosses other construction, ask what permissions, design input or alterations are needed. In a flat, include the relevant building or freeholder information before assuming the installation is feasible.

Use a pre-order sink relocation sheet

DecisionWhat to record
PositionExisting and proposed locations, drawing revision and setting-out reference.
DrainageProposed connection and route, inspection needed, access and responsible installer.
Sink and tapExact products, installation information, cabinet fit and tap movement.
WorktopChosen material, cut-out and support requirements, templating and fitting responsibilities.
Other servicesDishwasher or other affected connections and any separately required electrical work.
ReinstatementFloor, wall and cabinet alterations, decoration boundary and access after completion.

Keep a clear outcome beside every item: confirmed, excluded, allowed for or awaiting investigation. A blank cell should not become an assumed inclusion in the quotation.

Coordinate the cupboard and worktop details

A sink, trap, cupboard interior and adjacent appliance all need space in the same small area. Give their product information to the kitchen fitter and plumber together, including any storage accessories planned below the bowl.

Check the chosen worktop supplier's requirements before arranging templating. Howdens' preparation guidance, for its own template-and-fit service, shows how cabinet readiness and sink and tap decisions affect that appointment. Follow your selected supplier’s instructions, because details for one surface may not carry over to another.

An island sink needs a checked route too

Say you are moving a sink from the window wall to a new island. This is a planning example. The sink may fit the island cabinet, but that does not settle how the waste reaches the drainage connection or what floor work is needed. Resolve both questions before the island layout is released.

Keep any changed floor levels, protection and making good visible in the scope. Identify who checks the final connections and what information will be handed over.

What to send with your enquiry

For a kitchen refurbishment in London, send the postcode, old and new layouts, photographs, chosen sink and tap details and intended timing. If the drainage route has not been investigated, say so. We can discuss the building work and the checks needed for a meaningful quotation.
