Planning graphic for plasterboard & tile weight: background, weight basis, whole system.

Original planning overview. Use the actual project requirements.

Plasterboard tile weight needs to be checked against the specific board, surface finish and wall system. A limit for one background should not be applied to another, and the weight of the tile alone may not be the whole load being assessed.

Before ordering, identify the proposed tile and the wall it will be fixed to. Ask the tiler or responsible designer to confirm the applicable manufacturer guidance, including what materials any stated weight limit includes.

Identify the background accurately

Record the board product, number of layers where known, whether it has been skimmed and the existing finish. Ask what can be verified from records or inspection and what still needs investigation.

British Gypsum's White Book tiling guidance distinguishes board backgrounds from plaster finishes. Its limit for Thistle finish plaster is 20 kg/m² including tiles, adhesive and grout. Where a bonding agent is involved, that stated total also includes the plaster. Those conditions apply to the named background and do not give a universal capacity for every plasterboard wall.

Use the current guidance for your specified product and system. Do not transfer a named manufacturer's condition to an unidentified existing wall.

Collect the tile and installation information

Give the installer the chosen tile product and its technical information, including size and weight. Identify the proposed adhesive, grout and any other relevant layers. Ask the responsible person how the total should be assessed under the selected background guidance.

Large dimensions and a high weight are different questions. A tile's format can affect handling and installation requirements even where its weight is known. Ask for the chosen manufacturer’s installation guidance, and do not judge suitability from the tile’s appearance.

Use a pre-order suitability record

InformationWhat to establish
BackgroundExact board or substrate, finish, condition and evidence supporting its identification.
Wall constructionThe complete system and the relevant support or fixing information.
TileProduct, size, weight and technical information from the supplier.
Installation layersAdhesive, grout, preparation and waterproofing details as applicable.
Applicable limitSource, product conditions, materials included and the responsible assessment.
DecisionConfirmed arrangement, changes required or unresolved information before ordering.

This record helps organise a suitability check. It does not calculate or certify the capacity of a wall.

Keep waterproofing and loading connected

Wet-area preparation is a separate requirement, and it must also be compatible with the chosen background and tiling system. British Gypsum's moisture-resistant board guidance directs users to the tile adhesive manufacturer's instructions and relevant system guidance.

Ask the responsible team to confirm the complete arrangement, including waterproofing where required. A loading check does not establish that a shower background is waterproof.

A simple comparison to avoid

Say a supplier gives the weight of a tile and a homeowner compares it with a remembered limit for bare board. This is a hypothetical example. If the wall is plastered, or the stated limit includes other materials, that comparison may be using the wrong background or total.

Resolve those differences before buying the tile. If changes are needed, agree their effect on the scope, thickness, fixtures and programme.

Prepare the tiling enquiry

Send the postcode, photographs, known wall construction and the tile and product information. For a bathroom refurbishment package, make unknown backgrounds and any proposed large-format tiles clear at the start so the appropriate checks can be discussed.
